Vani Vilasa Sagara - Beautiful reservoir and an Engineering marvel

As we grow older, our time with our parents becomes more limited. I believe that at some point in our adult lives we should take the time to travel with our parents. My parents are the coolest and supportive of my travelling endeavours. When it comes to planning the trip with my parents, I take extra care to choose places of their interest - mostly architecture and nature. We decided to take a trip to Shimoga to meet our grandparents. A list of places marked down on the way and we started out to hit the Tumkur road. The first destination - Vani Vilasa Sagara / Marikanive dam in Chitradurga.

Brief on Vani Vilasa Sagara Dam / Marikanive dam
Vani Vilas Sagar Dam/ Vani Vilasa Sagara, also known as Mari Kanive, is the oldest dam of Karnataka built 103 years ago. It is located in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district, which is 160 km from Bangalore. The dam is an exquisite piece of architecture, an engineering marvel for that time, and provides water to lots of surrounding cities, towns and v…

Heritage Winery - SULA wine tour and tasting

It was 11 am in the morning when we bid adieu to SRS hills and DevaraKere lakeChannapatna has notable wineries and the tropical climatic conditions here are suitable for grape cultivation yielding great sugar content. We had the whole day with us and we started driving towards Heritage wine tour, which is located in Channapatna. Honestly speaking, I'm not a connoisseur of wines or a tippler, who regularly grabs a drink often. Still, I was curious to know how wines are made, how would it be to walk in a vineyard with grapes in full glory. This inquisitive feeling made me pay a visit to Heritage Winery.

Journey

There were two routes to reach - 1. the Mysore road highway and 2. the countryside route via Bylalu to reach Channapatna. Instead of choosing the highway, we chose to ride on countryside road just to take a glimpse of village life. Shady trees along the roadsides, fresh unpolluted air to recuperate, calm lakes and endless green farms. It was worth a drive along this route whi…

SRS hills / Sri Revanna Siddeshwara hills - Ride to the Holy Hills

Post monsoon is the best time for bike rides. The woods would be greener and climate would be a bliss to ride. It's the time to be over the hills and far away from the chaos of the city. Upon a suggestion this weekend, we decided we would plan for SRS hills trek Ramanagara. The place is just 65 km and 2 hours away from Bangalorealong the Mysore road. It appeared as the short one-day bike ride and an excursion away from the city.

Brief about SRS hills

Sri Revanna Siddeshwara (SRS) Betta(hills) is 65 km from Bangalore and is a height of about 3000 feet above sea level. It is an abode of Sri Revanna Siddeshwara - a form of Shiva and is sacred among Shaiva followers. The hills houses 3 temples - Sri Revanna Siddeshwara temple at the peak, the Bheemeshwara and the Renukamba temple at the base. The sacred cave temple is located on a massive monolithic sto…
